Today, I am having a total Bo Derek moment, braids and all, in my Story by Tang bodysuit. Couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the start of American summer than in a piece by an Australian designer I’ve loved since I walked in her TAFE Graduate Collection as a teenager (Paying respect to both my home country and my adopted country)! Tangy (Christine) designs clothes that walk a fine between feminine and masculine, relaxed and tailored, soft but with clean lines- and that is exactly what caught my eye about this piece and decided it would be perfect as not only outerwear, but loungewear for at home, underwear beneath sheer clothes (when you want more modesty than just a bra) and recently I’ve started wearing it as swimwear too. Obviously, it doesn’t offer a massive degree of support as it’s not intended to be lingerie, but it is so comfortable (made out of an incredibly soft cotton) it is now one of my favourite bodysuits. I’ve also slept in it a couple of times and it’s as close to sleeping naked as you can get without actually being so, for I do worry about those earthquakes sometimes…. sometimes… 8.5/10

American Apparel red lace geo bra and thong. My relationship with American Apparel lingerie is very up and down- sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it. There has been a vast improvement in their women’s underwear over the last year (with the introduction of underwire bra’s and more laces) and it has become my go-to for a quick, cheap lingerie fix. This style bra (soft cup triangle shape, with a hooks on the back) is far superior to their signature slip-on, rather support-less triangles. This offers some support whilst remaining comfortable. Having a rather small-back/large-cup combo it cuts in slightly on the top of the bust, but for the price I can’t complain that it’s not perfect. I LOVE the colour, fabric pattern and the cut of the bottoms- my favourite shape thong. Love this set for lazy/comfortable days without having to be boring or dowdy with cottons or neutral colours. I’m still holding hope that AA will soon do a higher, bikini cut brief to go with their bra’s as a counterpoint to the only current options of thong or leg, shortening, hip-widening, boyish-hipster (blergh!). Would buy again in more colours. 7/10

Welcome to a new section of The Daily Knicker where I profile my favorite lingerie lovers. These are the girls who’s obsessions rival my own, who provide and derive power, sensuality and enjoyment from their love of fine lingerie to the point where it needs to be a part of their daily life!

I am honored to introduce The Daily Knicker’s first ‘Lingerie Lover’ Dionne Harris-Taylor, who I’m fortunate to count as many things: friend, colleague, one-time roomie and major mutual pretty-knicker obsessive. Miss Dee Dee is a sugary sweet and sassy treat one considers themself lucky to encounter on a regular basis. Dark and mysterious on the surface and a pastel confection beneath, Ms Harris-Taylor is an enigma of the most delightful variety. Her fondness for all things French and frou-frou has inspired a career working within the ranks of Australian label Wheels & Dollbaby before heading to Europe where she now applies her expertise for Parisian purveyor of intimate apparel, Fifi Chachnil. It is she who feeds my dangerous- and expensive- addiction to the brand (enabler!). When I think of Ms Dionne I am instantly transported to a mental world of luxe lacquered black, glossy red lips, pretty pastel silks and laces, French sweet treats, champagne and flowers. Needless to say, it’s wonderful to know such an inspiring mademoiselle

What is the appeal that lingerie holds for you?

Lingerie for me is my favorite part of getting dressed or undressed.It is the best tonic for a bad mood, it is something to make you feel beautiful even if your hair is in a messy ponytail and you are dutifully filling your evening routines sans maquillage at the washbasin. Or something to lounge in on a rainy, grey afternoon at home when you just can’t think about going out or getting dressed. It’s like buying pretty flowers for your home or office, something delicate and inspiring to create a little beauty for the moment of getting dressed, to stay with you throughout the day.

I love that it can impact on how you are feeling about yourself, to lighten your mood with color, frou-frou ruffles and whimsy or to make you feel more dramatic, glamorous and confident. I struggle to buy clothes that I like at times, but can never resist a charming, whimsical new piece of lingerie for my wardrobe.

You can fold it down into basically nothing, but the fact that so much thought and care for design and color, that such attention to little details have been extended to such a small thing - is quite amazing. Also I love the way it looks en masse in my wardrobe and drawers! I wear a lot of black on the outside, but my lingerie collection is a riot of Marie Antoinette silk pastels, clashing hot pink polka dots, Brigitte Bardot ginghams, glittered silk and joyful gelato shades of ribbon trims.

Do you have any point or experience in memory that you think started your lingerie love?

Probably my teenage years at Catholic girls school, where the ultimate rebellion was to wear a black bra beneath our oddly semi transparent white blouses - it was against the school rules.

I remember begging my mum for a bra at about eleven and being woefully disappointed with the soft cup triangular white nylon number I ended up with (stuffed with tissues usually). Now I think about it though, it was kind of cute in a 70s kind of way - I love vintage-feeling nylon bras and slips now!

What was the first beautiful piece of lingerie you remember buying?

My first REAL lingerie piece was a Fifi Chachnil red and white polka-dot swimsuit bra-top. I was in love and spent about a month paying it off (it was over ten years ago and I was still a fashion student)- I still have it! It’s utterly adorable! I couldn’t afford the sweet little matching skirted briefs at the time, but I wore all my tops very low as to show it off!

What are your all-time favorite pieces?

A midnight blue sparkling Fifi ” Merveilleux” bra and “Jolie” brief from about seven years ago, almost disintegrated now, but I still have it. I wish I could buy this set again - it’s magical!

When at home I live in a little 60s nylon tulle babydoll from Fifi Chachnil called “Surprise Party.” It’s so easy to wear, cute and completely practical as it washes easily. I’ve recently become addicted to all manner of slips and babydolls.

What are your current favorite items?

I just recently purchased the perfect simple, classic black silk slip (Vicky mini noir available here: http://fifichachnil.com/fr/65-vicky-mini.html). It’ s the kind of understated, ladylike piece that brings to my mind the chic of Deneuve combined with the old Hollywood va-va-voom appeal of Elizabeth Taylor. I wear it with everything and its perfect beneath a pencil skirt with a little angora cardigan.

On the other end of the scale, I also find it impossible to resist an adorable tulle mini jupon - the kind of petticoat that lends itself to layering beneath full-skirted sundresses. But I just love the whole look and idea of it. (It wasn’t a ‘practical’ purchase-I just talk of the possible practical uses to justify its purchase to myself- its pure frou-frou frivolity really!)

What is on your wish list for future purchase?

The new Fifi Chachnil Spring Summer collection’s “Mina” silk and Calais lace slip in lemon yellow with matching angora cardigan. Also, from the new range “Paulette de Belle chasse”- striped cotton Pacotille bra and Voyage mini skirt (with giant bow tie at the back!) Although it is technically lingerie, I am desperate to wear this little set for the English summer on Brighton beach. It’s candy striped cotton will be perfect for eating ice-cream, perched on a blue striped deckchair in front of pastel hued beach huts…. in my dreams.

How do you look after your lingerie and store your collection?

My husband found me an old beautiful black lacquered chinoiserie styled cupboard that I keep most of my collection in. The rest fills Laduree and Fifi Chachnil tissue paper lined dresser drawers and hanging space in the closet.

Although I’d like to pretend when the doors are opened it looks like a shoot from “The Coveteur” in reality I do actually wear most of it frequently so it’s often a little bit of a mess.

My favorite pieces hang on pretty padded hangers draped across an antique French screen in my bedroom as I think it’s a shame to keep all those beautiful things hidden away. I love to admire them.

For laundry, I love the Tocca line of fragranced hand-washing solutions - makes the laundry less of a chore! And I always think that the bathtub full of pastel-hued silk whispers is such a pretty thing to behold! Once a week I press all of the silk pieces too, it takes time but it keeps everything beautiful.

What do you think your lingerie says about you?

It could possibly say that I am entirely impractical and unrestrainedly fanciful maybe, but with humor and a sense of the ridiculous!

What advice if any do you have for either fellow aficionados or novices hoping to add to their knicker drawer?

Don’t do as I have done, and sneak a few silk knickers into the washing machine when having a lazy attitude to housework- I’ve ruined a few pieces this way!

Wait for yearly sales to purchase additional knickers for your most favorite bras - it’s always nice to have something like a highwaisted pair and then a little cute low rise pair for different moods and looks.

Mix and match your pieces - sometimes I haven’t always been able to afford to buy an entire set of lingerie, so just a pair of amazing knickers. Find the style/cut of bra that suits you best (for me it’s Fifi’s Merveilleux and Sapristi) and look out for it each season in a new color way. And try a cute babydoll! Nothing makes you feel more glamorous or sweet for around the house.

This silk and lace trim set by Stella McCartney is comfy, practical and beautiful so in my opinion it ticks all the boxes for good luxury lingerie. The quality and fit is excellent (when I first tried it on it felt like clouds were holding up my breasts), and the brand provides bras for ladies with smaller back sizes and larger cups. The bra is lightly padded and lined with satin on the inside. I got it on sale at Coco De Mer but would definitely say that it is worth every penny full price. This style comes in a range of colours and I am hoping to get my hands on the navy next!”

“This is the ‘Webbed Thong’ from UK brand Bordelle. The front of this thong is soft and feminine, made with black silk and tiny elastic ruffles around the trim. The back on the other hand is a lot more risque- which was was the selling point for me. The straps are made from soft black elastic with black bows running all the way down the middle and wrap around to the front where they are met by 2 little silk bows on the hips. These knickers have just the right amount of both fetish and femininity. They fit perfectly (I wear a small) and are very soft and comfortable. They are gentle and sexy yet make you feel a little bit naughty, just the way I like to be! I give these a 10/10!”

Berlei Barely There Contour Bra and Barely There Micro G-string. This is the world’s most comfortable, functional bra, I swear. It’s like wearing nothing, even more comfortable than that (because take away the ‘ow’factor of having breasts that are not supported). It’s the only underwire bra I’ve ever been able to sleep in. I wear it on flights. Around the house. Running errands. Under sheer clothing. Beneath my ‘going out’ ensembles. You name it. It’s contoured, but adds no bulk. It lifts, but doesn’t give too much cleavage. It also comes in so many colours I can’t count and features extra little ‘comfort’ details like how the hook fastenings at the back are padded so they can’t dig into your back. I’ve paired this bra with matching black barely there g-string (which along with the brief version are my favourite basic bottoms as they are invisible beneath clothes and sexy without any on). Until now my only issue has been that the more colourful ‘Barely There’ bras haven’t had matching bottoms, but I’ve recently heard from the design team that this is changing soon- problem solved! Two more great reasons to buy (some more of) these? They’re currently being sold for $39 as opposed to the regular $54.95 and $5 from every pink ‘Barely There’ is donated to the Breast Cancer Network. 9.5/10

American Apparel stretch floral lace Bra and High-waist Brief

I was given these briefs by a friend and thought they would be very cute for wearing at home. However, being obsessive about matching sets I had to go get a bra in the same fabric. Not quite sure why I tried this style when i’ve reviewed it not-so-wonderfully before. Still zero support, somehow manages to make my boobs look worse and get this… the strap broke the first time I put it on and had to re-sew it. AA really needs to make a decent bra in this floral lace print, perhaps in their triangle or underwire styles, because the briefs are amazing, comfortable and a little stomach flattening and the lack of a functional matching top are the only thing holding it back. As a footnote, I thought this looked cute and kinda sexy in a retro, 70’s kind of way. My husband however saw me in it and said it was “the ugliest set of underwear (I) own…take it off.” And that was “take it off” not in a good way. 4/10

The Daily Knicker x By Fin Collaboration

My friend Amy Finlayson and I have wanted to collaborate on our respective loves (art and lingerie) for a while now. Miss Finlayson, inspired by the artwork of Richard Prince, came up with the wonderful idea of shooting my favourite white lingerie pieces and painting on the prints as an interpretation of Prince’s ‘Nurse’ series.

So here are the results! Not only do I love this super cool homage for art’s-sake, but I love it for what it says about my favourite aspect of lingerie- it’s ability to actualise a character and inspire or be inspired by other mediums (whether it’s books, films or paintings). Even if you or your significant other are the only ones that get to see your character ‘creation’!

Bra and brief by Fifi Chachnil. I have a love/hate relationship with the colour pink- so often (especially in lingerie) it’s done wrong. But Fifi Chachnil’s pink, French and from-frou world is of course the one place where the shade is conceived perfectly. Soft sheer lace mesh with polka-dots and ruffle trim, topped off with tiny orange-red rosettes inspired my friend to send me a picture of this captioned “You need this- Strawberry Shortcake!” so of course it ended up in my lingerie drawer. Great support from the balconette style bra and very comfortable little low-rise briefs means this is a deluxe but completely functional set. I could be a little ‘cleavagey’ at the moment as i get a hint of overspill/cut-in on the top of the bra- and of course, I always love a suspender option- but otherwise this is pretty much ‘The Perfect Pink’. 8.5/10

Tracy is a 24 year-old engineer who spends most of her time in safety boots and hard hats on construction sites. Under the layers and layers of safety clothes, lingerie is the little secret that helps her bring a bit of herself into work every day.

“The ‘Angela’ Dress by Bordelle. This is the most expensive piece in my lingerie collection and was a Valentines Day splurge that was more for myself than for my partner. The cups are structured while the rest of the dress is thick elastic. Because this dress only comes in three sizes (S, M, L), it means my poor little B cups aren’t quite full enough to fill out the cups of this dress. Luckily the cups hold their own and I don’t have any dreaded gaps in the cups. The elastic is super-comfy and not constricting at all, but does become a problem if I sit down, as this causes the elastic strips to bunch and twist (ouch). No biggie though, I don’t sit down much when I’m out dancing. I wish I had the option of wearing this under strapless dresses, but unfortunately the straps are sewn on and not detachable. That said, nothing takes away from the WOW factor of this piece. Guaranteed to get your partner looking twice. 8/10

Lonely by Lonely Hearts triangle soft-cup bra and cutout triangle brief. Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve found it- The holy grail of wireless, soft-cup bra’s. No compromise in style for comfort, I was instantly struck by the super cool tri-strap detail on this bra and the metal o-rings on the sides of the briefs. Love this pale, blue-ish grey shade too and the animal print of the mesh fabric is subtle and ambiguous. It provides just enough support to be able to wear it all day, yet feels like something you’d hang out at home in. Beneath clothes it’s smooth, yet if you want to show of the strap detail and what not you can also do that easily. ALSO- and this is heaven sent- it’s a soft triangle bra that comes in REAL sizes, i.e., 12b, 10c, etc as opposed to ‘Small/Medium/Large’, so it fits properly and perfectly! It’s comfy, it’s sexy, it’s cool, it’s totally cheap compared to most designer labels… I AM IN LOVE. 9.5/10.

I am restraining spending my lifesavings here, go also if you dare….(it’ll be worth it)

Agent Provocateur ‘Fifi’ Slip. I’m currently going through a bit of a phase with nighties/slips and and just generally any kind of sexy or cute sleep and lounger. I think this California-Tiah lifestyle I have here allows it- Really, I just alternate between things like this (at home, in bed) and chic gym clothes (gym, running errands… more on that later). This slip from AP was a Christmas present from my well-meaning husband, from their Classics Collection. It IS adorable- sheer silk, ruffles, lace trim, tiny satin bows, I’ve been fond of it for years on their website but just never bought it for myself. It’s comfortable, it’s pretty, it’s quality. However, when husband bought it he did say “I hope it fits your beautiful breasts though…” and that’s where the only problem lies. It’s not only small in the bust, it’s cut a bit of an odd-shape for a boob if you ask me (long, wide, shallow, applies pressure from the ribbon on top) and cuts in a bit. It’s ok though, but I am a little disappointed and am going to assume it’s made- along with the oomph-upping ruffles and ruching- for smaller-busted girls. Could be the husband’s wishful thinking. 6/10.

Berlei Soft Touch Wirefree Bra and Barely There Cotton G-String. Let’s admit it- as much as we all love ‘fancy’, there is something incredibly appealing about a perfect, crisp, white set of underwear. Whether it’s the freshness, the simplicity, the comfort or the connotations of ‘innocence’, a lot of women and men list it as their favourites. I used to be averse to it because well, I though it just couldn’t compare to buttery silk or an incredibly soft lace and there was just something too… common…about it for me. But I changed my mind when I tried these on. Always on the look out for supportive and comfortable soft-cup, wire-and-padding-free bra’s this was instantly the best I’ve found. The fabric is soft, the design is simple and I was able to match it up with a seamless white cotton thong. Completely functional, comfortable and just so clean- I want it in every colour. I never new simplicity could look and feel so good. 9/10.

Submit to The Daily Knicker!

One of my favourite things since starting The Daily Knicker has been having other people guest review and submit their own posts. Up until now guest posts have been mainly my friends, those I personally know appreciate a good pair of underwear. It’s great to hear about other people’s experiences, in their personal voice and photographed on themselves, in their own environment. I’m also deeply committed to showing not only a wide variety of lingerie, but of bodies and personalities and the women they all belong to.

But of course, there are more women out there with an interest in good lingerie than just my friends. And if you’re reading this, I’d love to have you share it with us!

Simply tell us a bit about yourself in a few sentences (if you’d like me to link to your profiles, websites or any online information I’d be more than happy to). Fifi Chachnil Bra, Brief and Suspender. I saw a picture of this set last year and pinned it up as “must-have” it was so beautiful. It truly is as beautiful in person and as I have other Fifi sets in similar styles I knew it would be quality and long-lasting. It’s the softest silk. The bra is a dream- light padding, a little cleavage but at the same time narrows your ribcage and makes the rest of your body look more petite, fits perfectly, comfortable. Perfect suspender. Beautiful shade of navy with black ruffles and trim. Comfortable, sexy classic Fifi ‘Minette’ brief. Can also wear this under pretty much anything. Every box ticked for me. This is what lingerie dreams are made of. 10/10.

Berlei are my favourite basics brand (not just because I’m their ambassador!- It’s been a long time, before-that thang!) they really do THE most incredible-fitting, seamless bra’s and bottoms that go beneath your clothes and shape your body in a way wear it looks like you’re wearing nothing. You can choose levels of support, alter straps, etc it’s mathematical, functional underwear that usually maintains a neutral and very sleek, aerodynamic aesthetic. So I love that they have recently started experimenting with prints and trims! Their basic blacks, whites and nudes have had it nailed for ages, but to be able to get an extreme level of comfort and support AND a cute detail is beyond. This is actually a blue/green-toned animal print (even though it looks a little like a cute small floral) in seamless micorfibre. No lines. The straps are adjustable to straight, halter, crossover… Personally I love this comfortable level of wicked cleavage that looks natural too. Big love for this first foray into stylin’, can’t wait to see how it evolves. 8/10.
